Bill Wateman’s original method is still the grown-up one. Pass line on the come-out (7 or 11 win; 2, 3, 12 lose). After a point, take odds — true odds, no house edge. That is the rare honest number on the layout. Place the 6 and 8 (they pay 7:6; bet in the right increments), sometimes 5 and 9. Skip the proposition bets in the center. They are neon. They pay because they have to.
Practice a free table if you can find one, then take a known cashier. Keep it simple; scale to the table minimum. Online layouts work the same. The chatter is quieter. The edge is not.
